The Nyesom Wike-backed faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has disclosed that it has formally invited the Taminu Turaki-led faction for reconciliation talks to resolve the lingering leadership crisis rocking the party.
The faction made the revelation on Tuesday amid ongoing efforts to unify the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.
A statement issued by the faction said the invitation was extended in good faith as part of genuine moves to reconcile all aggrieved parties and rebuild the opposition party.
The Wike-led group, which currently controls the PDP’s national leadership structure through the caretaker committee, stressed that it remains committed to an inclusive process that brings everyone on board for the sake of the party’s survival.
It described the reconciliation move as a demonstration of its willingness to put the interest of the PDP above personal or group ambitions.
The crisis in the PDP escalated after the court annulled the Ibadan convention and different groups continued to claim legitimacy, with the Wike faction and the Turaki faction emerging as major contending sides.
The Wike faction’s invitation to the Turaki group is seen as a significant step towards healing the deep divisions that have weakened the once-dominant party and exposed it to the risk of losing relevance in 2027.
Party stakeholders believe that without genuine reconciliation and a united front, the PDP may struggle to mount any serious challenge against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general polls.
The development comes days after Sule Lamido, a founding member of the PDP and former Jigawa governor, publicly warned that the party risks total collapse unless leaders urgently set aside their differences and work together.
No response from the Turaki-led faction has been reported yet as at the time of filing this report.
