NetNaija CEO Remanded in Kuje Prison Over Alleged Copyright Infringement

The Chief Executive Officer of NetNaija Media Enterprises, Emmanuel Analike, was arraigned on Wednesday at the Federal High Court in Abuja by the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) on multiple counts of copyright infringement.

Analike faces charges related to the alleged possession, reproduction, distribution, and making available of infringing copies of copyrighted works including movies and music through the popular NetNaija platform.

The offences are said to violate Section 44(1)(a) of the Copyright Act, 2022, according to the prosecution. He pleaded not guilty to all the charges brought against him.

Following the arraignment before Justice Suleiman Liman, the court ordered that Analike be remanded in custody at the Kuje Correctional Centre.

The judge deferred ruling on his bail application until March 9, 2026, after defense counsel notified the court of the filing.

The NCC's Head of Legal Services, Gladys Isaac-Ojo, described the case as a key step in ongoing efforts to combat online piracy.

She noted that Analike's arrest followed prolonged investigations into allegations that the NetNaija website facilitated the unauthorized sharing of sound recordings and audiovisual works belonging to both local and international creators.

This development highlights intensified enforcement by Nigerian authorities against digital piracy in the country's creative industries.

The bail hearing on March 9 will determine whether Analike remains in custody or is released pending trial.
