Suspected gunmen shot and killed Udeh Ijachi, a former caretaker chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area, in a late-night attack that has shocked residents of the area.
Ijachi, popularly known as “Honourable Ukpem,” was ambushed and fatally shot by unidentified assailants on Thursday night in front of Okabido Hotel in Otukpo.
Eyewitnesses described the incident as a sudden assault, with the attackers opening fire before fleeing the scene.
The killing left the community in confusion and fear, as residents and passers-by rushed out following the sound of gunshots.
No official motive for the attack has been established, and the reason behind the targeted killing remains unknown at this time.As of the latest reports, security agencies had not issued an official statement on the incident, though investigations are anticipated to determine the circumstances and identify those responsible.
Residents have called on security authorities to conduct a thorough probe and enhance security measures in Otukpo to avert further violence amid ongoing concerns about insecurity in parts of Benue State.
Ijachi was a recognizable figure in local politics and community affairs during his tenure as caretaker chairman of the local government.No arrests have been reported in connection with the killing.
