Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has concluded plans to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), according to authoritative sources within the APC.
The governor recently held consultations with his cabinet, political associates, and key stakeholders in Gusau to evaluate the state's political future amid the PDP's deepening internal crises, including leadership disputes and factionalism.
Sources indicate the switch could occur soon, potentially by the end of the current Muslim fasting period. If the move materializes, it would further weaken the PDP reducing its number of sitting governors while strengthening the APC's position ahead of the 2027 elections.
Stakeholders in Zamfara have reportedly urged Lawal to join the APC for better access to federal resources, especially to address ongoing security challenges like banditry and kidnapping.
Lawal has highlighted the disadvantages of remaining in opposition, noting that Zamfara has received limited federal support beyond statutory allocations since 2023.
The planned defection follows mounting pressure and recent defections by PDP figures in the state, with some reports linking it to an impending Appeal Court verdict on PDP leadership issues.
