Lagos Govt launches investigation into collapsed school building in Ogba

The Lagos State Government has launched a full investigation into the collapse of a four-storey building housing a private school and residential occupants on Adu Street in the Aguda area of Ogba, Lagos, on Monday.

The Lagos State Building Control Agency confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Director of Public Affairs, Adu Ademuyiwa, noting that no fatalities were recorded as students, staff, and other occupants had evacuated the building before it caved in.

“The building, which accommodated both residential occupants and a private school, collapsed on Monday, causing concern within the neighbourhood. No casualties were recorded as students, staff and other occupants had exited the building before the incident occurred,” the statement read.

The building housed Yemco Daycare Nursery, Primary and Comprehensive College. Some students were, however, reportedly hospitalised after sustaining injuries during the evacuation exercise.

Residents said the structure collapsed around 11am, shortly after a crack was spotted on the wall of the building by a nearby fashion designer, who quickly alerted school authorities and neighbours. Teachers immediately evacuated pupils, and the building came down within minutes of their exit.

LASBCA said agency officials, alongside the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency and other emergency responders, visited the site shortly after the incident to assess the situation and ensure public safety. Nearby buildings sharing the same premises were evacuated and sealed pending structural safety assessments.

“As part of precautionary measures, occupants of nearby buildings were advised to vacate their premises temporarily while safety assessments are being conducted on surrounding structures to determine their condition and structural stability,” the agency stated.

Preliminary observations by LASBCA indicated that some form of building activity had been ongoing at the property before the collapse, a claim corroborated by residents who said renovation work was underway on the ground floor. A comprehensive investigation, the agency said, is currently underway to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

LASBCA used the opportunity to remind property owners and developers of the importance of complying with regulatory procedures during construction or renovation works.
