A man identified as Opeyemi Lawal has reportedly died after he was allegedly beaten by officials at a car park in the Marina area of Lagos Island, Lagos State.
It was gathered that the incident occurred on Sunday after the victim was accused of stealing.
According to information that surfaced on Monday, Lawal was allegedly assaulted by two officials at the Marina car park, an attack that reportedly led to his death.
A Facebook user, Sheriff Ojon, who shared details of the incident online, alleged that the victim was severely tortured by the officials before he eventually succumbed to the injuries he sustained.
Ojon claimed that the assailants tied Lawal’s hands and legs while beating him, despite repeated pleas from the victim and residents in the area for the attackers to release him.
In his post, Ojon quoted an eyewitness as saying that attempts by residents to persuade one of the attackers, identified only as “Alhaji,” to untie Lawal were unsuccessful.
“They pleaded with him to untie Tope Lawal, but he refused until he finally gave up,” the post read.
According to the account, the victim also reportedly begged the attackers to stop, warning that he was close to dying, but his pleas were ignored.
The eyewitness further alleged that the suspect claimed he refused to release Lawal because he had been insulted by the victim two days earlier.
Following the incident, residents of the area reportedly visited a nearby police division on Monday to protest the death of the victim.
In one of the protest videos, a woman, whose identity was not disclosed, said several traders and residents in the area had appealed to the suspects to release Lawal during the assault, but their appeals were ignored.
“All the women selling clothes were begging Alhaji to free him, but he refused. The young man also pleaded that they should leave him because he was about to die, but they still refused,” the woman said.
Images of the deceased circulating on social media showed visible bruises on different parts of his body.
Efforts to get an official response from the Lagos State Police Command were unsuccessful as of the time of filling this report.
