ICPC Releases El-Rufai After Mother’s Demise

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has temporarily released former Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai from custody on compassionate grounds.

His son, Bashir El-Rufai, confirmed the development on Friday, March 27, 2026, stating that the release came shortly after the demise of El-Rufai’s mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, who passed away in Cairo, Egypt, after a period of illness.

The temporary bail allows the former governor to participate in her funeral rites. El-Rufai had been in ICPC detention for over a month following investigations into alleged financial misconduct during his tenure as governor, including claims of inflated severance payments and money laundering.

This followed an earlier court appearance where his bail hearing was adjourned to March 31, 2026. The ICPC granted the release on humanitarian grounds despite the ongoing legal process.

President Bola Tinubu has also sent condolences to the El-Rufai family over the loss.

The family has requested prayers for the repose of Hajiya Umma El-Rufai’s soul. Details on the exact conditions of the temporary release are expected to be clarified in the coming days.
