Hajiya Umma, mother of Nasir el-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna, has died.
Bello el-Rufai, the former governor’s son, announced the
death of his grandmother in a statement posted on X on Friday.
Bello, the lawmaker representing Kaduna north federal
constituency, said Umma died some hours ago.
“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. From Allah SWT we came
and to Him we shall all return. I would like to inform the public of the demise
of my Grandmother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai who passed away a few hours ago,” he
wrote.
“She is the biological mother of our father, Mallam Nasir
@elrufai. We are grateful for the life she lived and may Allah SWT bless her
gentle soul. May He bless the soul of the parents we have lost. On behalf of
our family, we seek your prayers.”
According to Arise TV, el-Rufai’s mother died in Egypt,
where she was receiving medical treatment.
The development comes as el-Rufai is in the custody of the
Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
On Tuesday, el-Rufai was arraigned alongside one Joel Adoga
at the federal high court in Kaduna over charges bordering on alleged money
laundering, fraud, and abuse of office.
The former Kaduna governor and Adoga pleaded not guilty to
the charges.
The court had adjourned his bail application to March 31.
El-Rufai has been in the custody of the ICPC since February
19 after he was released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission
(EFCC). He returned to Nigeria from Egypt on February 12.
