Gunmen Attempt to Block Amaechi from Entering Hometown in Rivers State

Armed thugs attempted to prevent former Minister of Transportation and ex-Rivers State Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi from accessing his hometown, Ubima, in Ikwerre Local Government Area on Friday, March 6, 2026.

Security details attached to Amaechi's convoy reportedly repelled the assailants amid sporadic gunfire, allowing him to proceed.

Social media videos showed gunmen blocking a key road in the community while firing shots.

The incident followed an overnight attack on Thursday where suspected political thugs set ablaze the African Democratic Congress (ADC) secretariat in Ubima Ward 8.

Residents linked the arson to efforts to disrupt Amaechi's planned visit to formally register with the ADC at the ward level, ahead of mobilization for the 2027 elections.Amaechi, a prominent ADC leader, hails from Ubima.

Sources described the attacks as politically motivated, with some alleging ties to rival factions in the state's volatile political landscape.

This marks the second reported assault on ADC figures in Rivers recently; party members faced alleged attacks during a sensitization program in Igwuruta Community in February 2026.

The Rivers State Police Command is yet to release an official statement on the events. No casualties were immediately confirmed from Friday's confrontation, though the incidents heightened tensions in the area.

Further developments, including any police investigation or statements from Amaechi or the ADC, are awaited.
