The Lagos State House of Assembly has wrapped up its investigation into recent demolitions in the Makoko waterfront community and adjoining areas, including Sogunro and Oko-Agbon.
An ad hoc committee, chaired by Majority Leader Noheem Adams and constituted by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, presented its findings after conducting hearings, stakeholder engagements, and site assessments.
The probe reviewed compliance with due process, environmental and safety concerns, provisions for alternative housing or relocation, allegations of excessive force during enforcement, and broader impacts on displaced residents.
During the committee's final meeting on Thursday, March 5, 2026, representatives from the three affected communities submitted varying positions on compensation, relocation options, and how to address the needs of those whose homes were demolished.
Some residents emphasized financial compensation, while discussions also touched on government plans for redevelopment, including a proposed "water city" project in the areas.
The Assembly stated that the full report, incorporating the committee's observations and the communities' inputs, will be submitted to the Speaker and debated by the 40-member House at a future plenary sitting for potential adoption and further action.
The developments follow earlier directives from the Assembly to halt ongoing demolitions and construction on cleared sites, amid protests and international attention on the displacements in Makoko one of Lagos' oldest and largest informal waterfront settlements.
Residents have continued to call for fair compensation, humane relocation, and greater transparency in urban renewal efforts.
No immediate details were released on specific recommendations or timelines for compensation payments.
Further updates are expected once the report is debated and any resolutions are adopted by the full Assembly.
