Kaduna State Governor Senator Uba Sani has taken steps to address long-standing grievances by allocating new plots of land to residents whose homes in Malali Low-Cost, Kaduna, were demolished under the previous administration of Nasir El-Rufai.
The compensation comes in the form of fresh land titles presented to the affected homeowners, fulfilling a promise by Governor Sani to deliver justice and support those impacted by the earlier demolition exercise.
Dr. Bashir Garba Ibrahim, Director General of the Kaduna Geographic Information Service (KADGIS), handed over the land documents to the beneficiaries.
He explained that the initiative stems from a stakeholders' meeting held on January 21, where the circumstances of the demolitions were reviewed and resolutions were reached to provide redress.
Dr. Ibrahim urged the recipients to develop their new plots promptly and cautioned against reselling them, stating, “We want you to become homeowners and contribute to the growth of our state.”The demolitions trace back to 2020 and 2021. In October 2020, the Kaduna State Development and Property Company (KSDPC) issued a seven-day quit notice to residents, which faced protests over the short timeframe and lack of right of first refusal, leading to it being temporarily shelved. However, in March 2021, a three-day notice was served, and following its expiration, authorities demolished over 80 structures in the area.
Since then, the affected residents have persistently engaged with the state government, seeking either compensation or alternative land allocations. Their efforts spanned nearly nine years.
Speaking for the beneficiaries, Alhaji Mohammed Auwal, chairman of the former Malali Low-Cost residents, expressed deep appreciation to Governor Uba Sani for his intervention and compassion. He also commended Dr. Ibrahim for his role in making the allocations possible.
Other residents echoed similar sentiments, praising the governor's people-centered approach and leadership. This move aligns with broader efforts by the Uba Sani administration to handle property-related issues with fairness, as seen in recent statements emphasizing that no demolitions or displacements will occur without adequate compensation in ongoing infrastructure projects across Kaduna State.
