Suspected Boko Haram fighters launched coordinated overnight attacks on two military positions in Borno State: an outpost at Ajilari Cross on the outskirts of Maiduguri and a base in Baga.
The Ajilari assault began around 12:30 a.m. Monday, March 16, 2026, with heavy gunfire and explosions ringing through nearby communities.
A rapid joint response by Nigerian Army, police, Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF), and Air Force units forced the attackers to withdraw after fierce fighting.
Borno State Police spokesperson ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso confirmed the incident, saying security forces had the situation under control.
“The suspected terrorists attacked Ajilari Cross,” he told our correspondent. “Call me later for details.
”Many residents, out for night prayers during Ramadan, reported panic as gunshots and blasts filled the air while military helicopters patrolled overhead.
“We were very scared the whole area was taken over by gunshots and explosions,” said Gomari resident Bashir Yusuf. “But Alhamdulillah, things have calmed and prayers have resumed.”
The attacks are part of a recent wave of Boko Haram strikes targeting military locations in Borno.Last week, Defence Minister Christopher Musa held an emergency meeting with Service Chiefs, later briefing President Bola Tinubu.
Musa announced a change in strategy and presidential approval for new military equipment to intensify the fight against insurgency.
