The Nigerian Army has solemnly buried 12 personnel, including three commanding officers, who lost their lives during ongoing counter-insurgency operations in Borno State. The burial ceremony took place Thursday morning between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. at the Maimalari Military Cantonment Cemetery in Maiduguri.
The event was conducted under tight security with restricted access to maintain solemnity and limit public and media presence. The deceased included three Lieutenant Colonels and nine other ranks. Nine soldiers were interred according to Islamic rites, while three received Christian rites.
The ceremony was attended by senior military officials, including the commander of Sector 3 and the Theatre Commander of Operation HADIN KAI. Representatives from the Borno State government were also present, led by the Secretary to the State Government, Hon. Bukar Tijjani, and the Commissioner for Local Government, Sugum Maimele.
Next of kin of the fallen heroes were on hand to pay their final respects. In a show of support, the Borno State government announced financial assistance: N5 million to each family of the three commanding officers and N1 million to each family of the other personnel.
The mood was profoundly somber, reflecting the heavy toll of the fight against insurgency in the region. In a poignant moment, former Borno State Governor Maina Maaji Lawan, visibly overcome by emotion and shock at the loss of the gallant troops, collapsed during the burial procession.
He was quickly attended to, resuscitated, and given water to break his fast before regaining consciousness.
The Nigerian Army continues to honor the sacrifice of its personnel while reaffirming its commitment to supporting the families of the fallen and pressing forward in the counter-insurgency efforts to restore peace in Borno and beyond.
