Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa has received a proposal for the upgrade of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, into a University of Agriculture, Science and Technology.
The development was disclosed in a post shared on the
official X page of the Ondo State Government, indicating plans to reposition
the institution to meet growing educational and developmental needs.
According to the governor, the proposed upgrade is a
strategic move aimed at strengthening growth in agriculture, science, and
technology within the state.
He noted that the plan is well structured, with clear
academic, financial, and infrastructural frameworks already outlined.
“The proposed university is a strategic step to boost
development in agriculture, science and technology, with a clear academic,
financial and infrastructural framework,” Aiyedatiwa said.
He also stressed the importance of innovation and emerging
technologies in modern education, urging that the transition process be handled
carefully to protect the interests of current students.
According to the statement, the proposal was presented by a
committee led by Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, who explained that the move is
expected to address the increasing demand for university education and improve
the institution’s global competitiveness.
He further noted that the proposal includes the creation of
multiple faculties, alongside a five-year sustainability plan to ensure smooth
operation of the institution.
“The upgrade will meet the rising demand for university
education and position the institution for global competitiveness,” he said.
The committee further said a draft law is awaiting approval
from the National Universities Commission NUC.
