Supreme court, not INEC, has final say on PDP leadership dispute - Turaki-led faction

The Kabiru Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says the Supreme Court has the final say on the internal leadership dispute within the party, not the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Ini Ememobong, national publicity secretary of the faction, said in a statement on Monday that the Turaki-led PDP had already approached the Supreme Court to seek a final verdict on the party leadership affairs.

INEC had recognised the national working committee (NWC) of the PDP backed by Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The electoral umpire published the factional leadership of the PDP on its website, with Abdulrahman Mohammed listed as the party’s national chairman.

Mohammed and other members of the NWC were elected on Sunday during the national convention held at Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

In response to the recognition of the Wike-backed PDP, the Turaki-led faction described the national convention as a pre-Easter jamboree of the All Progressives Congress (APC) sympathisers and members of “Wike’s autocratic party.”

Ememobong said that “they mischievously tagged a PDP convention was held in contempt of the Court of Appeal”.

“They were served with the processes of the appeal at the Supreme Court, as well as other suits challenging the holding of the said convention,” the statement reads.

“The validity of that gathering is now a matter before the court, which we will diligently follow to its conclusion,” he said.

He alleged that the crisis within the PDP is orchestrated by the Tinubu administration.

“We must admit what is already public knowledge – these are very trying times for us, the PDP, and all opposition parties in Nigeria,” Ememobong added.

“These crises are clearly orchestrated by the Bola Tinubu-led APC government, who have shown morbid fear for the existence of alternative political platforms and is determined to foist a one-party state on the country.

“This fear is fuelled by their knowledge of the impending rejection Nigerians are waiting to serve them because of their abysmal performance in core governance issues like security, the economy, and social welfare.”
