The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the Federal Capital Territory has filed a lawsuit seeking a Federal High Court order to prevent Senator Ireti Kingibe, the senator representing the FCT, from presenting herself as a member of the party.
This legal action follows her indefinite suspension by the Wuse Ward Executive Committee of the ADC, which took place approximately 48 hours before the suit was filed.
In the originating summons marked FHC/ABJ/CS/539/2026, filed on behalf of the ward chairman, Okezuo Godfrey Kanayo, and ward secretary, Isaiah Ojonugwa Samuel, the plaintiffs are requesting several declarations and orders from the court in Abuja.
These include:
Confirming that the Wuse Ward Executive Committee has the constitutional power under the ADC's rules to discipline and suspend party members.
Declaring the suspension of Senator Kingibe as valid and still in effect.
Issuing an injunction restraining her from parading herself as a member or card-carrying member of the ADC while the suspension remains active.
Declaring that the party's National Working Committee (NWC) should not recognize her as a member in any capacity during this period.
The suit cites relevant provisions of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended), Article 16 of the ADC constitution, and the Federal High Court Civil Procedure Rules, among other legal bases. As reported, the case had not yet been assigned to a judge.
This development represents the latest internal rift within the ADC involving Senator Kingibe, who recently joined the party after leaving the Labour Party in the lead-up to future elections.
Subsequent reports indicate conflicting positions, with the national leadership of the ADC distancing itself from the ward-level suspension and describing it as lacking authority or not officially recognized by the party. The court filing appears to stem specifically from the Wuse Ward faction seeking judicial validation of its disciplinary action.
