Trump raises global tariffs to 15% after US supreme court ruling

US President Donald Trump has raised global tariffs on goods imported from 10 percent to 15 percent.

The decision, announced on Saturday in a Truth Social post, comes one day after the US supreme court struck down his previous sweeping global tariffs.

Trump said he was “absolutely ashamed” of some of the justices who voted in favour of rescinding his order.

He doubled down on his stance in his Saturday post, calling the court’s decision “ridiculous, poorly written, and extraordinarily anti-American”.

“Please let this statement serve to represent that I, as President of the United States of America, will be, effective immediately, raising the 10% Worldwide Tariff on Countries, many of which have been ‘ripping’ the U.S. off for decades, without retribution (until I came along!), to the fully allowed, and legally tested, 15% level,” Trump said.

The US president said his administration will determine and issue the new tariffs in the next “short number” of months.

The tariffs were meant to take effect on February 24, before the Supreme Court affirmed a lower court’s finding that Trump’s reliance on the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to introduce the tariffs was unlawful.

In a 6–3 decision, the court ruled that Trump overstepped his authority by invoking a law designed for national emergencies to impose broad import taxes without congressional approval.

However, the decision allowed some tariffs on specific goods from certain countries to remain in place — potentially giving the administration a path to restructure parts of its trade policy.
