Troops of the Joint Task Force, North East Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), have destroyed three major detention facilities operated by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) deep within the Timbuktu Triangle forest.
The operations, conducted under Operation DESERT SANITY-V, targeted hideouts in the Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, with the Timbuktu Triangle spanning parts of Borno and Yobe states.
According to a statement by the Media and Information Officer of the Joint Task Force Operation HADIN KAI, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the successes stemmed from sustained, intelligence-driven offensives that compelled terrorists to flee positions previously regarded as impenetrable.
From January 21, 2026, onward, troops located and completely demolished the three detention camps, which preliminary assessments suggest were capable of holding up to 300 captives.
The intense military pressure triggered the escape of more than 70 hostages, many of whom have since reappeared in nearby communities such as Goniri, Buratai, and Mandaragirau.
One freed captive, Malam Jidda Ba Jidda, recounted escaping amid a fierce gun battle between ISWAP fighters and advancing Nigerian troops.During the engagements, no fewer than 32 ISWAP terrorists were neutralized, including two Qaids (commanders) and three Munzirs (deputy commanders), with several others wounded.
Following the clearance of the areas, troops deliberately razed the facilities to prevent their future use by insurgents, highlighting the high level of professionalism and operational effectiveness of Operation HADIN KAI forces.
The military emphasized that this operation has substantially weakened ISWAP’s capacity to detain civilians, extort ransoms, and exert control over local populations, further constricting the group’s operational footprint in the region.
The Nigerian Armed Forces reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to maintaining relentless pressure on terrorist groups and securing lasting peace across the North East.
