Tinubu's Intervention in Rivers Crisis Will Perpetuate Conflict, Not Resolve It – Jega

A prominent political analyst, Mahmud Jega, has criticized President Bola Tinubu's recent involvement in the ongoing political feud between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, warning that it is likely to prolong the crisis rather than bring it to an end.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Tuesday, Jega argued that the President's approach favors Wike in a way that undermines party structures and democratic norms.

"As far as I can see, President Tinubu’s intervention will perpetuate the crisis, instead of resolving it," Jega stated.

He highlighted a key contradiction: designating Wike as the "undisputed political leader" in Rivers State clashes with the All Progressives Congress (APC) constitution, which positions sitting governors as the leaders of their state party chapters.

Jega noted that Wike is not even a member of the APC, and recent statements from the party's National Secretary had suggested he should either join or refrain from interfering.

Jega further suggested that Tinubu's stance appears to endorse Wike's continued presence in the opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP), potentially to weaken it ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

"The President seems to be saying... that Wike’s remaining in the PDP, and what he’s doing there really has my blessing, because he is there essentially to wreck the PDP as an opposition party in the service of the President’s 2027 re-election hopes," he said.

According to Jega, this effectively grants Wike overarching influence over political affairs in Rivers State across both the APC and PDP—a situation he described as unprecedented in Nigeria's political history.

"This has never happened in the political history of Nigeria," he concluded.

The Rivers political crisis stems from longstanding tensions between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Wike, involving control of the state's political structure, party loyalty, and governance issues, with multiple past interventions by Tinubu failing to fully resolve the dispute.
