Tinubu, APC Governors Commit N8bn Relief for Kano Market Fire Victims

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pledged N5 billion in federal relief for traders affected by the recent devastating fire at Singer Market in Kano.

APC governors, through the Progressive Governors’ Forum, have collectively committed an additional N3 billion, bringing the total support package to N8 billion.

The announcement was made during a visit to Kano on Monday, where Vice President Kashim Shettima represented the President. He conveyed condolences to the affected traders and formally welcomed Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The fire at Singer Market destroyed goods and shops worth billions of naira, severely impacting hundreds of traders.

Shettima emphasized that the N8 billion is meant for immediate relief to alleviate suffering, not as full compensation, and assured continued federal-state collaboration for recovery.

In a significant political development at Sani Abacha Stadium, Shettima joined by APC leaders including Imo Governor Hope Uzodinma (Progressive Governors’ Forum Chairman), National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, and former Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje received Governor Yusuf into the party.

The APC flag was presented to him amid celebrations, marking his official defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

Shettima described Kano’s strategic importance, saying: “Wherever Kano moves, the nation moves with it,” and welcomed Yusuf as “one of the sons of Kano” now in the APC.

Governor Yusuf thanked the party for the warm reception and pledged to work for Kano’s progress while aligning with the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda on jobs, security, and infrastructure.

“It is what gives Kano progress that matters, not my convenience,” he stated. “Kano is too strategic to be disconnected from the federal government.”

To ensure unity, the parties agreed on a 60–40 leadership-sharing arrangement between new entrants and existing APC structures in Kano State.

National Chairman Yilwatda called the development a major boost for the ruling party.

The relief pledge and political realignment reflect efforts to support fire victims while consolidating APC strength in Kano.
