Lagos Govt to Deploy Surveillance Drones for Enhanced Security

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to deploy surveillance drones across the state to strengthen intelligence gathering, aerial monitoring, and rapid response to security threats.

The initiative was revealed by Mr Ayodele Ogunsan, Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF), during a press briefing on February 17, 2026, marking his first 100 days in office.

Ogunsan stated that the LSSTF will pursue a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nigerian Air Force and the Nigeria Police Airwing to facilitate coordinated deployment of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones.

This collaboration aims to boost surveillance coverage, improve intelligence collection, enhance operational coordination among security agencies, and enable quicker interventions against criminal activities.

The move is part of broader efforts to protect lives, property, and economic activities in Lagos, Nigeria's commercial nerve centre, amid ongoing challenges with insecurity.

Ogunsan emphasized the Fund's commitment to innovation and partnerships, saying: “Through collaboration and innovation, we will continue to strengthen security and ensure a safer environment for all residents.”

In addition to the drone plan, the LSSTF has recently deployed 80 new operational and patrol vehicles to security outfits, with more expected soon.

Other initiatives include rehabilitating abandoned Armoured Personnel Carriers, securing a private donor to build a permanent office complex for the Fund, and launching statewide training programs for security personnel focused on professionalism, tactical efficiency, and service delivery.

The announcement shows the state's push for modern, technology-driven approaches to security, building on existing efforts like vehicle deployments and capacity building to create a safer Lagos.
