Suspected Armed Herdsmen Attack Benue Market Killing Over 16 Traders

Tragedy struck the Abande market in Mbaikyor Ward, Turan district, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, on Tuesday afternoon when suspected armed herdsmen launched a deadly assault, killing more than 16 traders and residents.

The attack occurred during peak market hours as locals bought and sold goods. According to eyewitness accounts and community leaders, the gunmen opened fire indiscriminately on civilians, looted shops, stealing millions of naira in cash and merchandise—and set portions of the market and nearby structures ablaze.

A former supervisory councillor in Kwande LGA, Lawrence Akerigba, described the horror: “It was Abande market day. People were buying and selling when the herders attacked. They looted shops, took away large sums of money, and later set the market on fire."

Reports vary slightly on the exact toll, with most sources confirming at least 16 to 17 deaths, including civilians and at least one Mobile Police officer who responded to the scene. The Benue State Police Command acknowledged the incident, stating a distress call was received around 5:30 p.m. on February 3, 2026, about suspected armed herder bandits attacking police personnel and community members in Abande.

Governor Hyacinth Alia strongly condemned the attack, calling it cowardly and ordering security agencies to intensify operations, pursue the perpetrators, and restore safety to affected areas. He extended condolences to grieving families and reaffirmed the government's resolve against insecurity.

The assault has reignited concerns over persistent farmer-herder clashes and banditry in Nigeria's Middle Belt, disrupting livelihoods and displacing residents. Some community voices have criticized inadequate security presence in rural markets.

Police investigations continue, with calls for witnesses to provide information.
