The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured decisive victories in the Saturday by-elections for the Ungogo and Kano Municipal constituencies in the Kano State House of Assembly, with the sons of the two deceased former lawmakers emerging as the winners.
The polls, conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on February 21, 2026, filled vacancies created after the lawmakers, both originally elected on the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) platform died hours apart on the same day in December 2025.
The deceased were:
Aminu Sa’adu (or Aminu Sa’ad), representing Ungogo constituency.
Sarki Aliyu Daneji (or Sarki Aliyu), representing Kano Municipal constituency.
Their sons contested and won under the APC banner following a political realignment, reportedly linked to Governor Abba Yusuf's shift toward the ruling party.
Results declared by INEC returning officers:
Ungogo Constituency: Aminu Sa’ad Sa’ad (APC) polled 8,975 votes to win decisively. His closest opponent, Shua’ibu Hashimu of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), received only 54 votes.
Kano Municipal Constituency: Aliyu Nabil Daneji (APC) secured 7,484 votes to claim the seat.
The by-elections were marked by a significant boycott from major opposition parties, including the NNPP (the original platform of the deceased lawmakers), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The parties cited alleged irregularities, security concerns, and claims of a process tilted in favor of the APC. As a result, the APC faced minimal competition, with some reports noting low voter turnout.
The victories represent a notable political shift in Kano, where the APC has capitalized on defections and family succession to strengthen its foothold in the state assembly.
The outcomes align with the party's recent successes in other concurrent polls, including by-elections in Rivers State.INEC officials described the process as largely peaceful, though observers highlighted voter apathy in some areas.
The newly elected lawmakers are expected to be sworn in soon to represent their constituencies in the Kano State House of Assembly.
