A student has been shot by Nigerian Army personnel in a rural Benue community, sparking local calls for investigation.
The incident took place on Wednesday evening in Sai, when troops were returning from Tse Jato after providing security escort for the burial procession of a man reportedly killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
According to residents and family sources, the victim, Tsavnav Gabriel, a student at NKST Secondary School in Sai, was struck by a bullet as the soldiers moved through the community. He was immediately rushed to a local clinic in Sai, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.
The shooting occurred amid the region's persistent security challenges, including farmer-herder conflicts that have displaced many households, including that of the injured student's family.
Community members have urged the Nigerian Army to thoroughly probe the circumstances of the incident and accept responsibility if wrongdoing is established. Sympathizers have expressed hopes for the student's quick and full recovery.
No official statement has been released by the Nigerian Army or the Benue State Police Command regarding the event. Attempts to obtain confirmation from police authorities were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
