The National Sports Commission (NSC) of Nigeria has begun efforts to prevent sprinter Favour Ofili from representing Turkey at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
According to a senior NSC official, Ofili received a $20,000 training grant from the commission in 2025 as part of support for elite athletes. Because of this funding, the NSC is seeking to extend her mandatory waiting period for a nationality change beyond the standard three years required by World Athletics.
The commission wants the restriction extended until September 2028, after the LA Olympics conclude, arguing that Ofili "remains our athlete" and should be ineligible to compete for Turkey at the Games.
Ofili, who has excelled in the 100m and 200m (including a sixth-place finish in the 200m at Paris 2024), switched allegiance to Turkey in 2025, citing repeated administrative frustrations and neglect by Nigerian athletics authorities during major events like Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024.
