Sierra Leone’s President Dr. Julius Maada Bio has conferred the prestigious Grand Commander of the Order of the Rokel on Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede.
The award was presented during a grand parade marking the 17th Armed Forces Day of the Republic of Sierra Leone.
A statement from the Director Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba, confirmed the honour on Thursday, February 19, 2026.
The decoration recognises Gen. Oluyede’s distinguished service and contributions to peace and stability in Sierra Leone during his deployment with the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) in the 1990s.
The citation highlighted his role as Platoon Commander at the residence of Sierra Leone’s then Head of State between 1992 and 1994, where he demonstrated exemplary leadership, commitment, and dedication to protecting the government and fostering peace.
The award also serves as a tribute to the broader sacrifices of Nigerian officers and soldiers who served under ECOMOG and helped restore stability in Sierra Leone.
Other notable recipients at the ceremony included former Nigerian CDS Gen. Martin Luther Agwai (rtd), Lt.-Gen. Daniel Opande (rtd) of Kenya, Lt.-Gen. Ibrahima Sory Bangoura of Guinea, Maj.-Gen. Paul Rogers of the United States, and Brig.-Gen. Edward Butler (rtd) of the United Kingdom.
