Senate Seeks Extra ₦30bn for INEC to Fund 2027 General Elections

The Senate Committee on Electoral Matters has recommended an additional ₦30 billion allocation to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to support the conduct of the 2027 general elections.

INEC had earlier submitted a budget proposal of ₦873 billion for the nationwide polls, covering preparations, logistics, voter registration updates, security arrangements, and other operational requirements.

According to National Assembly correspondent Lami Ali, the committee is pushing for the supplementary funding primarily to address logistical challenges and enhance overall efficiency in the electoral process.

The additional amount is intended to ensure smoother operations, better deployment of materials, improved technology infrastructure, and timely execution of critical pre-election activities.

The request comes as lawmakers emphasize the need for adequate resources to deliver credible, transparent, and hitch-free elections in 2027.

INEC has consistently highlighted funding constraints as a major factor affecting electoral preparations in past cycles, and the proposed increase aims to mitigate similar issues ahead of the next general polls.

The ₦30 billion top-up is expected to form part of ongoing discussions on the 2026 and 2027 federal budgets, with the full INEC appropriation still subject to approval by both chambers of the National Assembly and presidential assent.

No official response has been issued yet from INEC regarding the committee's recommendation.
