Tunji Disu: Profile of Nigeria's New Inspector-General of Police


President Bola Tinubu has appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Olatunji Disu, popularly known as Tunji Disu, as the 23rd Inspector-General of Police (IGP), succeeding Kayode Egbetokun, who resigned on February 23, 2026, following a directive from the president.


Disu, a seasoned career officer with over 34 years of service in the Nigeria Police Force, brings extensive experience in operations, criminal investigations, intelligence, and leadership to the top policing role. 


His appointment, confirmed by multiple presidency sources on February 24, 2026, comes amid ongoing efforts to strengthen national security and address persistent challenges like kidnappings and banditry.


Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos Island, Lagos State, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police after training at the Nigeria Police Academy in Kaduna (now Wudil, Kano State).


 He has risen steadily through the ranks through dedication and professional performance.Educationally, Disu holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Education from Lagos State University (LASU). 


He further earned two master's degrees: one in Public Administration (from Adekunle Ajasin University, Ondo State) and another in Criminology, Security, and Legal Psychology (from LASU). 


He has completed numerous specialized training programs in Nigeria and internationally, covering areas such as small arms smuggling, internet fraud, strategic leadership, forensic investigations, and more.


Key highlights of his career include:


Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos, where he led proactive crime-fighting efforts in Nigeria's commercial hub. 


Head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Nigeria Police Force, appointed on August 2, 2021, succeeding Abba Kyari; he focused on modernizing tactical operations and intelligence-led policing. 


Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, where he was credited with significant improvements in security and earned recognition as a top performer (including awards for excellence). 


Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, starting November 2023, emphasizing public safety and community engagement. 


Most recently, AIG in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos. 

 

Disu is described by sources as a highly decorated, tech-savvy, and professional officer known for integrity, gallantry, and commitment to modern policing. 


He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.His appointment as IGP is seen as a strategic move to inject fresh leadership into the force at a critical time, with expectations for enhanced professionalism, accountability, and effectiveness in tackling insecurity. 


An official handover and formal announcement are anticipated soon, pending any required Senate confirmation as per standard procedure.
