Kano Assembly Seeks Govt Action Over US Proposed Sanctions on Kwankwaso


The Kano State House of Assembly has called on the state government to urgently intervene following reports of proposed United States sanctions against Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and former Kano State Governor.


In a motion adopted unanimously during plenary on February 24, 2026, the Assembly urged the Kano State Government to take appropriate steps in response to the allegations leveled against Kwankwaso in the US.


The motion, moved by Hon. Usman Tasiu, representing Kiru Constituency, and presided over by Speaker Jibril Ismail Falgore, highlighted concerns over US moves to impose sanctions, including potential asset freezes and visa restrictions, on Kwankwaso. 


The allegations reportedly include anti-Christian positions, involvement in religious freedom violations, and links to terrorism financing.


The Assembly described Kwankwaso as a dedicated public servant whose leadership promoted peace, education, infrastructure development, and unity between Christians and Muslims in Kano. 


Members emphasized his role in mediating conflicts between northern and southern Nigeria and his strong opposition to terrorism.


The US proposal stems from the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026, introduced earlier in February by US Congressmen Riley Moore and Chris Smith. 


The bill recommends targeted sanctions under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act against individuals and groups accused of severe religious freedom violations, explicitly naming Kwankwaso alongside Fulani-ethnic nomad militias and Miyetti Allah associations.


The Kano Assembly's resolution follows widespread condemnations from Kwankwaso's allies, the NNPP, APC figures, and others who have dismissed the claims as politically motivated, unfounded, and lacking evidence.


No formal sanctions have been imposed yet, as the bill remains under consideration in the US Congress. 


The Kano State Government has not issued an immediate public response to the Assembly's
