Police Repel Bandit Attack at Kebbi Border in Late-Night Gun Battle

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force Counter Terrorism Unit successfully repelled a suspected bandit attack along the Maje border road in Kebbi State on Thursday night, February 20, 2026.

The incident occurred around 9:45 pm when armed men, believed to be members of the Lakurawa criminal network, advanced toward security positions.

The attackers reportedly used a herd of cattle to mask their movement under the cover of darkness in an apparent attempt to breach the border corridor.

Vigilant police operatives engaged the assailants in a fierce gun duel, forcing them to retreat hastily.

Some temporary security structures sustained damage during the exchange of fire, but no lives were lost and no injuries were reported on either side.

Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, Umar Mohammed Hadeija, confirmed the successful repulsion in a statement, praising the professionalism of his men.

“Our operatives were vigilant and professionally responded to the attack. The bandits were repelled and forced to flee. Although some temporary security structures were damaged, no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded,” Hadeija said.

The commissioner issued a stern warning to herders and livestock owners, urging them to avoid night grazing or cattle movements that could provide cover for criminal elements.

“We urge herders and livestock owners to desist from night grazing or movement of cattle in a manner that creates suspicion or provides cover for criminals. Security agencies will take firm and lawful action against any unlawful activity linked to such practices,” he added.

Police Public Relations Officer Bashir Usman reiterated the command's commitment to safeguarding lives and property.

“The Kebbi State Police Command remains committed to protecting lives and property across the state. We will not relent in our efforts to dismantle criminal groups threatening the peace of our communities,” Usman stated.

In response to the incident, security reinforcements have been deployed along the border corridor, with intensified patrols and surveillance on vulnerable routes to prevent further incursions.

The situation has since returned to calm and remains fully under control, authorities said, as residents are encouraged to go about their lawful activities without fear while security operations continue.
