In the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections held on February 21, 2026, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured a key win in Gwagwalada Area Council, while the All Progressives Congress (APC) held onto Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Mohammed Kasim of the PDP as the winner of the Gwagwalada chairmanship race. Returning officer Prof. Philip Akpen announced the results on Sunday morning, stating that Kasim satisfied all legal requirements and was duly elected.
Kasim polled 22,165 votes to defeat his closest rival, Yahaya Shehu (also referred to as Yahaya Usman in some reports) of the APC, who received 17,788 votes.
Biko Umar of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) came third with 1,687 votes, followed by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate with 1,336 votes.
Meanwhile, in AMAC, incumbent chairman Christopher Maikalangu of the APC was declared the winner after amassing 40,295 votes out of 62,861 valid votes cast.
The ADC placed second with 12,109 votes, while the PDP trailed with 3,398 votes. Total votes cast in AMAC stood at 65,197, with 65,676 accredited voters from a register of 837,338.
The declarations highlight a mixed outcome in the FCT polls, with PDP securing a notable victory in Gwagwalada amid broader APC dominance in other councils.
