Obidients Launch 'Village Boys Movement' to Counter Pro-Tinubu 'City Boys'

Supporters of Peter Obi, widely known as Obidients, have rolled out the "Village Boys Movement" as a direct grassroots counter to the high-profile "City Boys Movement" backing President Bola Tinubu's political agenda.

The emergence of the Village Boys Movement comes amid growing criticism of prominent southeastern business figures, including Obi Cubana and Cubana Chief Priest, for aligning with the City Boys, a group of influential entrepreneurs promoting Tinubu's achievements and preparing for his potential 2027 re-election bid.

Critics within Obidient circles have viewed these endorsements as a shift away from the "common man's" interests toward elite, urban-focused politics. In response, the Village Boys Movement emphasizes empowerment at the village and rural levels, aiming to mobilize everyday Nigerians, particularly in underserved communities around themes of good governance, accountability, youth opportunity, economic inclusion, and integrity. Proponents describe it as a people-centered initiative that prioritizes the "forgotten" masses over flashy, big-money campaigns.

Social media has seen rapid uptake of the Village Boys branding, with supporters framing it as an organic, low-cost "masterstroke" that flips the narrative on the more resourced City Boys effort. Discussions online highlight it as a symbolic battle: urban elites and "city" influence versus rural and grassroots power, with many Obidients declaring it a fight for true national interest over identity or elite politics.
