Oby Ezekwesili Joins Protesters at National Assembly Demanding Electoral Reforms

Dr. Obiageli "Oby" Ezekwesili, former Nigerian Minister of Education and founder of the FixPolitics Initiative, was spotted at the protest grounds outside the National Assembly complex in Abuja amid the ongoing demonstrations calling for comprehensive electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The seasoned activist and vocal advocate for transparent governance joined a coalition of civil society organizations, labour leaders, and prominent figures under the Movement for Credible Elections (MCE).

Protesters have gathered for the second consecutive week to pressure lawmakers to retain and strengthen key provisions in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, particularly the mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results from polling units.

Ezekwesili has been outspoken on the issue, insisting that real-time e-transmission is non-negotiable for credible polls. She has warned that any weakening of this clause would undermine public trust in the electoral process and play into risks of manipulation through manual collation.

The demonstration, which saw security forces barricading entrances to the complex, featured other notable participants including Femi Falana (SAN), Prof. Pat Utomi, Dr. Usman Bugaje, Comrade Joe Ajaero, and Senator Shehu Sani. The group addressed the media and rallied for the complete elimination of manual result collation to ensure greater transparency and prevent interference during vote counting.

The protests coincide with the National Assembly's resumption of debates on the Electoral Act amendments, heightening public scrutiny over the future of Nigeria's electoral integrity. Demonstrators vowed to sustain mobilization until meaningful reforms are secured to safeguard the credibility of future elections.
