NNPP Firmly Rejects Claims of Kwankwaso’s Demands Blocking APC Defection

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has categorically denied reports alleging that its national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, presented unreasonable demands that prevented his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In an official statement, NNPP National Publicity Secretary Ladipo Johnson described the claims as entirely baseless and fabricated. He stressed that no discussions regarding a move to the APC ever took place.Johnson stated:

“It is deeply regrettable that these falsehoods are not only being concocted by self-important individuals but are also being published as lead stories in major national newspapers.”

He added: “We wish to state clearly and unequivocally that Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has never held any meeting whether with President Bola Tinubu or any of his representatives, inside or outside the APC—where the subject of defecting to another party was discussed.”

Addressing the specific allegations of high-level demands, Johnson dismissed them as “completely nonsensical,” pointing out that a recent publication outlining supposed reasons for a failed defection, including demands for party structure control, a vice-presidential slot, or other concessions lacked any foundation, as no such negotiations occurred.

The NNPP suggested the reports may be part of a coordinated effort to discredit Kwankwaso.

“It is possible these stories were deliberately fabricated to tarnish Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso’s reputation,” Johnson said.

“However, such malicious campaigns have failed.”He concluded by calling on the public to disregard the reports: “This is the plain truth.

"We therefore urge Nigerians to ignore these media stories, whether presented as news, features, or opinion pieces that peddle falsehoods. This is a poorly executed attempt to damage Kwankwaso’s standing, and it has fallen flat.”

The controversy emerged following the recent defection of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the APC, which fueled speculation about Kwankwaso’s political future ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The APC has maintained that its doors remain open to Kwankwaso should he decide to join, though party sources confirm no formal talks are currently underway.
