The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly rejected allegations from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that civil servants and government workers are being coerced into participating in its ongoing electronic membership registration exercise.
In an official statement released today and signed by National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, the APC described the ADC's accusations as "nonsensical," "entirely false," and "baseless."
The party accused its rival of launching a deliberate disinformation campaign to undermine the success of what it calls a "cutting-edge" and "pathbreaking" digital registration process.
The controversy stems from the ADC's statement issued on February 1, in which it raised alarms over reports from multiple states claiming that public servants were facing pressure—linked to the APC's national leadership—to register with the ruling party.
The ADC described the alleged tactics as "economic coercion" and "forced political membership," arguing that such actions violate constitutional rights to freedom of association and compromise the neutrality of the civil service.
The APC countered that millions of Nigerians, including civil servants, have joined voluntarily and enthusiastically, inspired by the achievements of President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda. Citing the overwhelming response, the party announced an extension of the registration period from January 31 to February 8, 2026, to accommodate popular demand.
"The phenomenal turnout proves that ADC’s coercion narrative is unfounded," Morka stated, emphasizing that no one has been compelled to participate.
The APC further accused the ADC of fabricating evidence, including a fake "APC membership slip" falsely claiming that a notorious terrorist had registered with the party.
The ruling party framed the ADC's criticisms as signs of intimidation and panic over the APC's "phenomenal success" in growing its membership base through innovative digital means. It positioned the exercise as a model of "digital and democratic innovation" in Africa.
The exchange highlights escalating political tensions between the ruling party and opposition groups ahead of future elections, with the APC celebrating massive voluntary registrations while the ADC warns of potential overreach and abuse of power.
