The Kwara State Government has stepped up efforts to curb street begging statewide, especially in Ilorin, following the arrest of a suspected bandit who posed as a beggar in Igbaja, Ifelodun Local Government Area.
Commissioner for Social Development, Hajia Mariam Nnafatima Imam, announced the intensified enforcement on Friday, February 13, 2026, during a monitoring exercise in Ilorin.
She highlighted how criminals, including bandits, exploit begging as a disguise to carry out illegal activities, gather intelligence, or move undetected in communities.
The suspect was apprehended on Tuesday evening, February 10, 2026, based on intelligence tips. Elder Oyin Zubair, Coordinator of the Joint Security Watch for Kwara South Senatorial District, confirmed the arrest, describing it as part of a broader trend where bandits and informants use beggar disguises to evade security operatives.
Security sources noted that some bandits fled areas like Baba Sango after their informants posing as beggars were tracked, prompting them to spread to other parts of Kwara South with similar tactics amid ongoing operations.
In a statement released on Saturday by the ministry's Press Secretary, Rasheedat Shodunke, the commissioner stressed that the state will not allow street begging to serve as a cover for crime.
The crackdown seeks to reduce social vices and improve overall security. This follows recent incidents of kidnapping and banditry in parts of Kwara, with authorities urging residents to stay vigilant and report suspicious individuals.
