Bandits have killed no fewer than 32 farmers in a series of coordinated attacks on Tugan-Makeri (also spelled Tunga-Makeri), Konsoko (or Konkoso), and Pissa communities in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The assaults began early on Saturday, February 14, 2026, around 3:00 a.m., when suspected bandits invaded Tunga-Makeri village in the Shafachi District, killing at least six people, setting several houses ablaze, and abducting an unspecified number of residents, according to police and resident accounts.
The attackers then reportedly moved to nearby Konkoso village, where they continued their rampage, burning a police station among other properties.
Details on the full toll in Konsoko and Pissa remain emerging, but local sources and reports from outlets like Daily Trust indicate the cumulative death toll reached at least 32 farmers across the affected areas.
Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the initial attack on Tunga-Makeri in a statement, noting that operations were underway to pursue the assailants and rescue abducted victims.
Residents described the attacks as devastating, with many fleeing for safety amid fears of further incursions.
Borgu LGA has faced recurrent banditry in recent months, including earlier incidents in nearby villages that resulted in dozens of deaths and abductions.
Authorities are yet to provide an official updated casualty figure or details on security reinforcements, but the incident has heightened calls for improved protection in vulnerable farming communities.
