Kano Senator Orders Ex-NNPP Chairmen to Return Vehicles After APC Defection

Senator Rufai Sani Hanga, representing Kano Central Senatorial District, has ordered former New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) local government chairmen in his district to immediately return vehicles previously allocated to them for party activities.

The directive follows the mass defection of key NNPP figures, including Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight House of Representatives members, and all 44 local government chairmen to the All Progressives Congress (APC) last week.

A letter dated January 28, 2026, signed by the Secretary to the Senator’s Office, Engr. Ibrahim Nakwalli Kawaji, and sighted by Daily Trust, was addressed to affected chairmen, including Alhaji Ubale Isyaku Waskas of Kura Local Government Area.

“You are hereby directed to return the party vehicle provided to you by the Distinguished Senator Rufai Hanga for NNPP activities in your local government,” the letter stated.

It instructed that the vehicles be returned to the senator’s office at No. 48, Sokoto Road, Nasarawa GRA, Kano, between January 28 and January 30, 2026.

The letter added that the vehicles would be held at the senator’s office pending resolution of the NNPP’s internal crisis, while urging the recipients to remain faithful to the party during this period.

The directive applies to all NNPP local government chairmen across the 15 local government areas in Kano Central Senatorial District: Dala, Dawakin Kudu, Fagge, Garun Mallam, Gezawa, Gwale, Kano Municipal, Kumbotso, Kura, Madobi, Minjibir, Nasarawa, Tarauni, Ungogo, and Warawa.

The letter emphasized that handover must be made directly to the head of the senator’s office, Alhaji Shehu Tijjani Usman Tarauni, describing the vehicles as party property and stressing the need for immediate compliance.

The move has sparked criticism from some quarters. Social media user Sani Gilashi Haruna described the demand as unfortunate and inconsistent with political norms in Kano State.

He cited the example of prominent politician Alhaji Abdussalam Abdulkarim (AA Zaura), who previously distributed vehicles to party leaders across all 44 local government areas without recalling them after electoral setbacks.

Haruna noted that Senator Hanga had earlier framed the vehicle distribution as empowerment, questioning the logic of now demanding their return following defections.

In response, AA Zaura’s spokesperson, Malam Dahiru Ahmad Maihuddadu, announced that the politician is prepared to provide alternativeand reportedly better vehicles to the affected NNPP leaders if Senator Hanga insists on retrieving the originals.

“AA Zaura is ready to support the leaders with better vehicles,” the spokesperson said, describing the senator’s directive as regrettable.
