Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, has credited President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms with rescuing no fewer than 27 Nigerian states from financial collapse.
Speaking on Saturday during a lecture at the 34th convocation and 43rd founders’ day of the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, Niger State, Idris said many states were unable to meet basic obligations before the current administration took office.
“About 27 states could not pay salaries before this administration came in,” he stated in his lecture titled ‘Youth and Nation Building: Navigating Opportunities in an Era of National Reforms’.
The minister explained that President Tinubu’s decisive policy actions reversed the trend by significantly increasing federal allocations to states.
“Now, states are getting three times what they used to get. They can now pay salaries, execute massive infrastructure projects, and deliver dividends of democracy to their people,” Idris said.
“These were made possible by Tinubu’s reforms and effective leadership strategy.”
He described the reforms as essential to avert a deeper national crisis and to create new opportunities, particularly for young Nigerians.
“There is no nation-building without reforms. It’s impossible for you to build a nation if you don’t continue to undertake these reforms,” he emphasized.
Idris noted that the president had campaigned nationwide with a clear vision for Nigeria’s progress and began implementing bold changes immediately upon assuming office in May 2023.
The remarks reinforce the administration’s position that its economic measures despite short-term challenges have stabilized state finances, cleared salary backlogs in many places, and enabled greater investment in infrastructure and public services.
The event at FUT Minna served as a platform to celebrate academic milestones while reflecting on Nigeria’s ongoing reform journey and the role of youth in national development.
