The Federal Government has launched two pivotal policy documents and declared eight preventive oncology clinics fully operational across key federal tertiary health institutions.
The announcements were made by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, during a ministerial press briefing in Abuja to commemorate the 2026 World Cancer Day, observed globally on February 4 under the theme “United by Unique.”
The newly unveiled documents, the National Nuclear Medicine Policy and Strategic Plan (the first of its kind in Nigeria) and the National Cancer Control Plan (NCCP) 2026–2030—are designed to serve as comprehensive roadmaps for enhancing cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, research, survivorship, palliative care, and sustainable financing.
Dr. Salako described the launches as a significant milestone in implementing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda in the health sector, emphasizing the need to curb the rising burden of cancer through prevention, early intervention, and improved access to quality care.
The NCCP 2026–2030 provides a clear framework to guide federal and state governments, development partners, civil society, and other stakeholders in strengthening cancer risk assessment, screening, and overall response, while promoting innovations such as precision oncology and artificial intelligence.
The Minister formally declared eight preventive oncology clinics operational to expand access to routine cancer screening and early detection services.
These facilities are located at:
Federal Medical Centre, Abuja
Federal Medical Centre, Ebute-Metta, Lagos
University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin
University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu
Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto
Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe
Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano
Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife
Professor Usman Malami Aliyu, Director-General of the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT), highlighted that the new policy frameworks and centres represent a major step forward in reducing the disease burden and improving survival outcomes for cancer patients across the country.
As part of ongoing efforts, NICRAT is supporting initiatives like free nationwide cancer screening throughout February 2026, with programs across the six geopolitical zones to promote early detection and better treatment results.
