FG Embraces Community-Driven Strategy to Combat Insecurity in South-East

The Federal Government of Nigeria has adopted a community-driven approach to tackle persistent insecurity in the South-East region, emphasizing non-kinetic measures and grassroots collaboration.

This shift was highlighted following a strategic meeting between members of the Presidential Community Engagement Team and senior officials from the Ministry of Defence.

The discussions centered on strengthening ties through community-led security strategies, enhancing intelligence gathering via structured engagement with locals, better communicating government interventions to communities, channeling grassroots feedback to the Ministry, and building greater trust between citizens and security agencies.

Barrister Chioma Nweze, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (South-East), described the partnership as "a renewed commitment by the Federal Government to inclusive security management and community-led peacebuilding efforts in the South-East and across the country."

Key initiatives include the establishment of a joint working team to coordinate regional security summits across the South-East states.

These summits will bring together local, state, and federal stakeholders, providing citizens with a platform to voice security concerns and contribute to practical solutions.

Additionally, a direct communication channel has been created between the Ministry of Defence and the Presidential Community Engagement Team to ensure ongoing coordination, timely information sharing, and effective follow-up.

The approach also prioritizes targeted programs to positively engage youths, discourage their involvement in activities that fuel insecurity, and address underlying socio-economic drivers of unrest in the region.

This community-focused, non-kinetic strategy aims to address the pressing security challenges in the South-East by fostering collaboration, improving intelligence, and promoting sustainable peacebuilding at the grassroots level.
