FCT Communities to Gain Electricity Access Through Korea-Funded Solar Mini-Grids

Nigeria is accelerating access to reliable electricity by deploying solar mini-grids to more underserved communities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and beyond.

The latest intervention, supported by the Government of the Republic of Korea, has seen the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) commission a combined 1MW solar hybrid mini-grid system in partnership with Korean partners.

The project includes a 900 kWp solar facility in Rubochi—serving thousands of households, businesses, schools, and health facilities—and a 100 kWp installation in Ikwa. Together, these systems deliver stable, 24/7 clean energy to over 5,000 households and institutions that previously endured prolonged blackouts or unreliable power supply.

Funded as an in-kind grant from South Korea, the initiative integrates solar generation, substantial battery storage (including 1,800 kWh in Rubochi), and modern distribution infrastructure. Residents in Rubochi and Ikwa now benefit from continuous electricity, which is driving local economic activity, improving security, enhancing education and healthcare delivery, and enabling productive uses such as small-scale businesses and agro-processing.

This Korea-backed project forms part of Nigeria’s broader renewable energy strategy to electrify millions through mini-grids. The collaboration also includes technical capacity building for Nigerian engineers, providing access to advanced design software for future mini-grid developments.

The commissioning represents a key milestone in tackling energy poverty in parts of the FCT and highlights the transformative potential of international partnerships in advancing sustainable energy access across Nigeria.
