Prominent figures from Nigeria's political, diplomatic, and international spheres assembled at the Murtala Muhammed Arcade in the nation's capital on Thursday to pay tribute to former Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Muhammed, on the 50th anniversary of his assassination.
The solemn gathering served as a moment to reflect on the late general's short yet profoundly impactful leadership. General Muhammed, who headed Nigeria from July 1975 until his tragic assassination on February 13, 1976, is widely remembered for his decisive reforms, fierce anti-corruption campaign, creation of new states, and bold steps toward relocating the federal capital from Lagos to Abuja, among other transformative initiatives during his approximately 200-day tenure.
Representing President Bola Tinubu at the event was Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume. Other notable attendees included Professor Ibrahim Gambari, former Chief of Staff to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, the Ambassador of Angola, and various dignitaries from government and the diplomatic community.
Organisers emphasised that the ceremony was held to honour General Muhammed's "brief but very remarkable" rule, which continues to leave an indelible mark on Nigeria's political landscape through his emphasis on discipline, integrity, and national progress.
This Abuja commemoration forms part of broader nationwide and international activities marking the golden jubilee of his passing, organised by entities such as the Murtala Muhammed Foundation.
These have included memorial lectures, leadership conferences, wreath-laying ceremonies in other cities like Lagos, special prayers, and reflections on his Pan-African vision and anti-corruption legacy.
