Ex-Archbishop of Canterbury Praises Gov Uba Sani’s Leadership

Former Archbishop of Canterbury, His Grace Justin Portal Welby, has commended Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani for restoring relative peace, unity, and stability in a state long plagued by ethno-religious crises.

Welby, the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury, made the remarks during a courtesy visit to Governor Sani at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House in Kaduna on Saturday, February 1, 2026.

The visit occurred on the sidelines of Welby's role as guest speaker at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria Convocation Lecture.

Reflecting on his first visit to Kaduna in 2002 amid deep divisions and frequent violence Welby noted the dramatic positive change under Governor Sani's administration.

He said the current atmosphere of peace directly prompted his visit to acknowledge the governor's efforts and encourage sustained commitment to reconciliation and cohesion.

"The relative peace, unity, and stability in Kaduna State informed his visit... to acknowledge his efforts and encourage him to sustain the path of reconciliation and cohesion," Welby stated.

Governor Uba Sani thanked Welby for the honour and shared details of his administration's "Kaduna Peace Model." Implemented over the past two and a half years, the model emphasizes equity, justice, inclusive dialogue, and development across all communities.

It has resulted in no ethno-religious crises since Sani took office.Governor Sani highlighted that these deliberate policies have transformed Kaduna, earning growing international recognition for interfaith harmony and effective governance.
