Gov.Abiodun Donates ₦2 Million to Overall Best Graduating Student at OOU


Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to education as a foundational pillar of development, announcing cash awards totaling ₦8.5 million to top performers at the 35th Convocation Ceremony of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) in Ago-Iwoye.


Represented by his Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, Governor Abiodun presented ₦500,000 to each of the 13 best graduating students from the university's various faculties. 


The highlight was a ₦2 million donation to Master Ajayi David from the Faculty of Engineering, who emerged as the overall best graduating student.


The ceremony, held at OOU's permanent site, coincided with celebrations marking Ogun State's 50th anniversary, with the university recognized as a significant legacy of the state's progress.In his address, Governor Abiodun emphasized strategic investments in education, pointing to the ₦275.4 billion (17% of the ₦1.7 trillion) allocated to the sector in the 2026 state budget. 


“The 35th Convocation celebrates academic excellence, access, and institutional relevance,” he said. 


“By placing reliable data at the centre of decision-making, our administration has enhanced transparency, improved outcomes, and ensured that every intervention across the education value chain is strategic and measurable.”


He added: “This reflects our determination to expand access to quality education, reduce inequality, and ensure no child is left behind, regardless of background or location.”


The Governor congratulated all graduates, urging them to remain lifelong learners, ask critical questions, and serve as ambassadors for OOU. He praised the institution for producing competent, innovative, and disciplined graduates ready to contribute to society.


Vice-Chancellor Professor Ayodeji Olayinka Johnson Agboola highlighted OOU's strong national standing, ranking 16th among 321 Nigerian universities in academic visibility, research output, and web presence, and second among state-owned institutions. 


He commended Governor Abiodun's prioritization of education as a driver of development and aligned the university's goals with Nigeria's Renewed Hope Agenda, focusing on knowledge-driven growth, innovation, digital transformation, and sustainability.
