El-Rufai Suffered Nosebleed in Detention, Wife Barred from Delivering Meal – Aide

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai experienced a nosebleed while in custody and his wife was prevented from personally delivering food to him, his media adviser has alleged, raising fresh concerns about his health and treatment during detention.

In a statement issued late Monday, February 23, 2026, Muyiwa Adekeye said El-Rufai has now spent eight days in detention since voluntarily reporting to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on February 16 in response to an invitation.

Adekeye recounted that El-Rufai was interrogated by the EFCC and granted administrative bail with conditions, but he remained in custody as his lawyers sought a variation of the terms.

On the evening of February 17, one of his wives attempted to deliver a meal but was not allowed to hand it directly to him; instead, she was required to give it to an EFCC official for onward delivery.

The aide further disclosed that El-Rufai suffered an overnight nosebleed while detained, an incident his legal team has highlighted as part of broader worries regarding his health, family access, and legal representation.

On the night of February 18, El-Rufai was transferred from EFCC custody to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) without prior notice to him or his lawyers.

Since the transfer, a bail application submitted to the ICPC on February 19 has received no response, and no remand order has been presented to justify holding him beyond the constitutional 48-hour limit without charge.

Adekeye noted that El-Rufai is due in court on Wednesday, February 25, for the hearing of a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed against the Federal Government, ICPC, EFCC, and Department of State Services (DSS).

The suit seeks an order for his immediate admission to bail. The media adviser described the reported conditions in detention, including restricted family access, health incidents, and lack of response to bail requests as raising serious questions about due process and the former governor’s welfare as legal proceedings advance.

No official response from the EFCC or ICPC on the specific allegations of the nosebleed or meal delivery restrictions has been reported.
