The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned Professor Armaya’u Hamisu Bichi, former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Dutsinma (FUDMA) in Katsina State, before a Katsina State High Court on charges related to an alleged N19.7 million bribery scheme.
The arraignment took place on Thursday, February 5, 2026, before Justice Musa Danladi Abubakar. Professor Bichi was docked alongside two co-defendants: Lawal Tukur Mani and Aliyu Lawal Jari. The trio faces a five-count charge bordering on bribery and abuse of office.
According to the EFCC, the offenses occurred during Bichi's tenure as Vice-Chancellor, where he allegedly received kickbacks from contractors in exchange for awarding contracts for the supply of medical equipment and laboratory furnishings at the university.
One of the specific charges alleges that in July 2023, Bichi, while serving as a public servant and Vice-Chancellor, obtained a bribe of N5 million from Theophilus Ilechukwu of Goezek International Agency Nigeria Limited.
The payment was purportedly a reward for awarding contracts related to medical equipment supply and laboratory furnishing. The funds were allegedly directed into an Access Bank account (number 152610172) belonging to co-defendant Aliyu Lawal Jari.
The EFCC stated that Bichi received the bribes through the second and third defendants, who acted as conduits for the illicit payments from contractors awarded various projects at FUDMA.
All defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges. The case is punishable under relevant sections of the Penal Code Law of Katsina State, 2021, including Section 79 (a), (b), and (i).
The matter has been adjourned for further hearing, with the EFCC continuing its prosecution of the alleged corruption involving abuse of public office for personal gain.
