The Ebonyi State Government has imposed a strict daily curfew and ordered the immediate closure of all schools in Amasiri communities following the brutal killing and beheading of five residents in Okporojo village, Oso Edda, Edda Local Government Area.
The measures, announced by Governor Francis Nwifuru on Saturday night after an on-the-spot assessment of the scene, stem from a renewed communal clash linked to a long-standing boundary dispute between Okporojo (in Edda LGA) and neighboring Amasiri (in Afikpo LGA).
Suspected warlords from Amasiri communities are alleged to have carried out the attack, which also involved the destruction of houses and property worth millions of naira.
The curfew, effective immediately, restricts movement in Amasiri communities from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. the following day. All markets, shops, banks, quarries, and business activities must remain closed during these hours.
In addition, all public and private primary and secondary schools in Amasiri Development Centre and the Amasiri clan have been shut down indefinitely.
Parents and guardians are advised to relocate their children to schools in nearby communities, while teachers and tutors have been directed to report to institutions outside the affected area.
Governor Nwifuru, speaking after a high-level State Security Council meeting at the New Government House in Abakaliki, described the killings as barbaric and a disregard for human life.
The council resolved on sweeping actions, including:Dethronement of all traditional rulers in Amasiri Clan (with two already removed and certificates withdrawn).
Immediate dissolution of the Amasiri Town Development Union executives, village heads, women leaders, youth leaders, peer groups, and all community-based organizations.
Temporary takeover of governance and administrative responsibilities in Amasiri by the chairmen of Afikpo, Onicha, Ohaozara, and Ivo Local Government Areas.
Repeal of the law establishing the Amasiri Development Centre, with a bill to be sent to the State House of Assembly.
Redeployment of all Amasiri Development Centre staff to their parent local governments.
Security agencies have been mandated to recover the severed heads of the victims, arrest all perpetrators, and bring them to justice.
The governor emphasized that these resolutions must be implemented with immediate effect to restore peace and prevent further violence in the region.
