Former presidential aide and prominent commentator Bashir Ahmad has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to review the recently announced timetable for Nigeria's 2027 general elections, citing potential challenges for Muslim voters due to the scheduling during the holy month of Ramadan.
In a statement shared following INEC's announcement that the Presidential and National Assembly elections are set for Saturday, February 20, 2027, with Governorship and State Assembly polls following on March 6, 2027, Ahmad described the dates as falling within Ramadan, a sacred period of fasting, prayer, and spiritual focus for Muslims.
Ahmad noted that many Muslims significantly scale back demanding activities during Ramadan to prioritize religious obligations. With Nigeria's large Muslim population, he argued that holding such a major national exercise during this time could hinder full and inclusive participation.
"If the intention is to encourage full and inclusive participation in the electoral process, scheduling such a critical national exercise during Ramadan may present challenges for a large segment of the population," Ahmad stated.
He emphasized that the observation was made respectfully, in the spirit of inclusiveness and national cohesion, and hoped it would prompt reconsideration for broader convenience and engagement. The comments come shortly after INEC Chairman Prof.
Joash Amupitan unveiled the timetable at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, February 13, 2026. The schedule also includes continuous voters' registration starting in April 2026 and other preparatory activities leading up to the polls.
