Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar hosted a high-level meeting with the National Chairman of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), Engr. Yabagi Yusuf Sani, and other senior party executives at his residence in Abuja on Saturday.
The closed-door engagement comes at a time of heightened political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 general elections, fuelled by circulating rumours of a potential alliance between Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) leader Rabiu Kwankwaso.
Speculation has suggested the duo could pursue a joint ticket possibly under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in a bid to challenge Atiku or other contenders for opposition unity against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
However, ADP National Chairman Yabagi Yusuf Sani moved quickly to downplay any merger or recruitment agenda tied to the meeting.
In a statement, he described the session as part of the party's ongoing consultations with key democratic stakeholders to promote dialogue and prepare for Nigeria's political future.
"The engagement was not about a merger with any party, nor was it about recruiting any individual into the ADP," Sani clarified, emphasizing that democracy flourishes through open discussions among leaders.
The meeting shows Atiku's continued efforts to build bridges across political lines as opposition figures explore strategies to mount a formidable challenge in the next presidential race.
